How You can Help Flo
Ware Park
(Here's How We Did It!)
After more than a year of planning and consultation with the neighborhood, we have
an approved plan, and are moving into the next phase: finding the
money to pay for the renovation. Friends of Flo Ware Park have
begun raising the needed funds, which are estimated to total about
$500,000. The
committee has applied for several grants. See
how we're doing with grants!
Success in attracting grants will be gauged by the
level of community participation in giving towards this
project. Than means that every $5, $10 or $20 gift or more is
counted as participation by the community. Whatever amount of
giving you can do will make a big difference! Let's make
Leschi an even better neighborhood for children. Please
participate in this project.
We need to raise $27,000 of the budget from our
community. So far, we have had the following fund raisers:
- Turkey Raffle
- Slide show on Historical Leschi
- December insert in the Leschi News.
- Flo Ware Day donations and baked goods
- April insert in the Leschi News
- Red Apple Receipts
- Summer Flo Ware Park Celebration
- Summer Raffle
- October Flo Ware Park Benefit Party
As
of November 18, 2002, we have contributions for all of our $27,000
matching funds from the community! We still need $14,000 to
make the dream of Flo Ware Park a reality.
Here are some things
you can do to help:

Just
a note: Flo Ware Park was originally purchased with Federal Funds as
part of "The Great Society" in the 1970s.
Save
your Red Apple receipts and donate them to the Flo Ware Park renovation
effort. This is a painless way to
donate to the park. Save your Red Apple receipts. When you
have a bunch, contact Cynthia Davenport cyndav@worldnet.att.net
to donate your receipts.
As of November 18th, we have
received over $500 from Red Apple by collecting receipts. Keep those
receipts coming.
The Red Apple stores donate to any community group 1% of
the cash
register receipts turned in by that group. The Leschi Community Council
voted earlier this year to earmark for Flo Ware Park any funds it receives
from this Red Apple program.
One percent may
seem like a small amount when you look at your individual receipts, but
when combined with those of your friends and neighbors, they add up.
No
receipt is too small! Even
an 11-cent receipt for the copy machine helps.
Receipts from ANY Red Apple store in the state of
Washington are accepted. So whether you
shop at Bert’s
in Madison Park, Hilltop on Beacon Hill, Promenade
on Jackson, Union Street (formerly
Roger’s), or a Red Apple anywhere else in the state, save your
receipts and give them to Cynthia Davenport.
Email her at cyndav@worldnet.att.net and she will arrange to pick up your
receipts. Or you can bring them to the monthly Community Council meetings.
Volunteer This
has been a grassroots project from the beginning. We are looking for
more volunteers to work on the renovation of Flo Ware Park. We need
people to do a variety of things including fund raising activities,
fliers, newsletter articles, art projects, ideas and many other
tasks. Please contact John Barber
barber-osa@attbi.com
if you are interested in helping.
